Memoirs of a Graduate

Just another WordPress.com weblog

Last night I had the most fantastic idea. After months of tweeting that I was interested in reading some student experience blogs and getting no response (other than members of staff interested in the same thing…), I have now decided to write about my own student experience.

My experience could be described as quite representative of some students’ experience at uni… Starting with the anxiety of whether you’re A Levels are good enough to get into your first choice, the worry about leaving your friends and finding new ones but I also dealt with the stress of money, bullying, bereavement whilst at uni, crime and employability at the end.

I had a tough experience - nearly quit twice, got quite ill half way through, repeated a year but ultimately came out with a 2:1. My story has ended a happy one, but I would like to share this experience as I know that there are many students out there going through the things that I went through so hopefully I can point people in the right direction of who to turn to for help as I learned the hard way.

I’ll try to keep this updated now with regular posts so please come back soon .

The Eternal Student August 13, 2009

I was thinking yesterday that this is what I am (or what I seem to be…) An Eternal Student… and it is not a bad thing. Students are stereotyped as being lazy binge drinkers, and when I got the job at the Students’ Union my own mother thought I was that type of student and she thought that was why I wanted to stay in the university environment – but it’s not!

I am the eternal student because, at 25 years old, I am still coming to the university campus every day and I am still learning every day. Take this blog for instance, I didn’t know how to set one up a month ago and now I’m learning more and more about social media and putting my degree (Media and Communication) to good use because  at work I’ve been looking at how useful twitter and blogs are as marketing tools.

Therefore this blog is currently an experiement and will hopefully only get better and more interesting as my skills develop.

the-computer-demands-a-blogI guess as wordpress have helpfully entitled this blog ‘Hello World!’ that I should indeed greet the blogging world.

This is my first ever blog, which is funny considering in my last job I was mandated to keep a regular blog and never did! For my current job I will actually do it as it is part of my job description as a project officer in charge of the communications strategy and it’s nice to have the time to be able to sit down with a cup of tea and chat to the world.

Right, so I should really tell you a little about me – but not too much as I’m a bit cagey about giving out too much information online. I work at a university (which shall for now remain nameless!). I have now been at this university for 5 years as I studied here for 4 years, was elected to be a sabbatical officer at the Students’ Union for a year and have now moved over to the apparent ’dark side’ to work for the university.

Work is the main reason why I’m trying out this blogging lark, as  a project support officer I’m going to need to be blogging and tweeting quite alot to keep all the externals up to date with the project, so this is just a starting blog to see what wordpress can do.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank ‘Mr. WordPress’ for his comment contribution – especially as he wrote his comment before I wrote my blog..!
